FAQs – AI Company Data Initiative

Why is AI governance data important?

There is currently limited data available on how companies are using AI tools, and what this means for people, society and the environment. A more transparent approach to AI adoption can drive best practice, create a benchmark for companies and investors, and ensure the technology is used for the benefit of all.

What does the survey cover?

Through a voluntary survey, the AI Company Data Initiative guides companies to map how their organisation is using AI across products, operations and services. The survey covers factors including:

  • the impact of AI on the workforce
  • legal accountability
  • environmental impact
  • data privacy and bias.

It is grounded in UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, the first global standard on AI use.

Why should companies take part?

The AI Company Data Initiative is a guide for business leaders navigating AI opportunities and oversight.

The free, voluntary survey will provide businesses with a benchmark for responsible corporate AI adoption that will enable them to position themselves as best in class to investors and other stakeholders.

In this fast-paced environment, getting ahead of potential risks and future legislation is vital to remain competitive and avoid future penalties.

By taking part, companies become part of a network driving best practice on AI adoption, with access to resources, events and peer learnings.

Which companies can take part in the AICDI survey?

The AI Company Data Initiative is open to companies of all sizes, across all sectors. It is not limited to AI developers and large tech companies, and will include private as well as listed companies. As part of our outreach, we will send the voluntary survey to companies in industries that will be the most affected by AI development and/or deployment.

Why should investors take part?

For those managing responsible investment portfolios, a lack of transparency on how companies are using AI prevents clear decision-making and carries potential risk implications. The AICDI Initiative offers investors voluntary data from global companies on how they are using AI across products, operations and services. This will allow you to conduct informed stewardship and drive long-term value.

How will the data be used?

Companies are asked to submit as much data as they can in response to the annual survey. Responses are submitted online via the secure Nossa Data online reporting platform. Companies can choose how much voluntary information they make publicly available. Each response is scored based on the level of completeness and each company will be given a confidential disclosure score and scorecard. The Thomson Reuters Foundation and UNESCO will analyse AICDI data as part of research into the current development and deployment of AI.
